What we offer at Trees & Bees Ltd

What do we produce?

We specialise in producing pure bulk honey in the drum for supply to the commercial New Zealand honey packer market. We have the storage capacity to store drums safely and securely. We often make arrangements to supply our selected bulk wholesale customers their ordered drums of honey as required.

We also produce a small amount of honey packed under our own Tutaki Honey brand for local sales. These honeys are good examples of and showcase the types of honey that we produce.

We produce some distinctive varieties of honey taking great care with managing our beehives and harvesting regimes to separate the different honeys from each of the dominant nectar flows that are particular to our region.

All our honeys are homogenised, that is lightly stirred, as the freshly extracted honey is filling the holding tank and continues to stir for a few hours thereafter. This creates a ‘tank sized’ batch of honey so that the last kg of honey to be poured off is consistent with the first.

Our sampling system ensures that any sample presented to any prospective customer is always truly representative of the honey that we offer to supply. Also, samples of all batches of honey are submitted for laboratory testing to ensure the customer, that the honey is exactly what we say it is.

The science

Firstly, a pollen count analysis provides us with the basic knowledge of the floral makeup giving us an indicative percentage of each predominant floral nectar source.

Other tests are also undertaken such as: moisture content, colour grade, conductivity for the honeydew, a test to show that the honey has not been heated, and any other tests if specifically requested, but all this so we can provide our commercial customers with a confidence that the honey we supply is of good quality and is indeed what we describe it as.

If the honey is from manuka sites we determine that the honey is actually Manuka with each batch tested for the 5 attributes per the MPI export requirements. Then all the usual MGO, DHA, NPA type Manuka tests to provide all the information we can so our customers may make an informed decision regarding their purchase.

Local honey sales

Our Tutaki Honey is supplied to local shops and cafes and available for our ‘gate sale’ customers who buy from our small honey shop. Many of our regular customers had at some time, on passing through Murchison, called in to buy and taste our selection of unique honeys. It’s wonderful that many of those ‘honey-loving’ customers still call in, perhaps on their way home from holiday, or contact us for the good deal we can offer especially to those who want to stock up with a family sized order.

We are happy to courier honey to anywhere in NZ for those who would like to restock their pantry or perhaps try our honey for the first time but suggest that consideration should be given to the cost of the courier and the environment. We can suggest an optimal minimum amount to make the process worthwhile for all.

Our main types of honey

Great care is taken to produce the best honeys that we can in our region and we are very fortunate to have our hives in or next to Conservation land and untouched National parks.

Manuka

We believe that our Manuka honey that we produce is some of the very best, winning Gold for a particular batch at the 2021 Apiculture New Zealand Honey Awards. Our Manuka is laboratory tested to prove it is a genuine Mono-floral Manuka and is creamed to create a very smooth delicious Manuka honey.

This is produced throughout the Buller River catchment which has some of the most beautiful and unique landscape that New Zealand has to offer that attracts people from all over the world to come and experience its world class rivers and untouched national parks.

Beech Dew

Our Beech Dew (Honeydew), winning silver for a particular batch at the 2021 Apiculture New Zealand Honey Awards, is a delicately flavoured honey collected from the native beech forests throughout the Murchison region. It is not so sweet as many other honeys and tends to remain liquid with an inviting clear ruby colour and smooth texture.

Buller Bush

Buller Bush honey is made by the bees that forage amongst the wildflowers of the Buller Gorge just west of Murchison. This honey is stronger and distinctive in flavour particularly as the bees gather nectar from the beautiful white flowers of the native Kamahi trees. This honey is creamed for a smooth velvety mouth feel.

Wild Flower

The Wild Flower honey is a natural blend of both Beech dew honey, pastural floral sources and bush nectars. This honey may naturally separate over time in the jar to show the layers of dew and other sources but with a gentle mix with a spoon or knife it can be folded back through to give an even taste. This seems to be very popular with children and is a nice mild flavoured honey.
